Abstract: Mobile IP (MIP) enables a mobile node (MN) to continuously access the Internet without changing its IP address. The main shortcoming of MIP is that the MN needs to perform binding-update frequently during the movement of the MN, which results in much signaling overhead. To reduce the signaling overhead, internet engineering task force (IETF) presents hierarchical mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) protocol. Based on HMIPv6, an adaptive hierarchical mobility management scheme is proposed, in which a mobility anchor point (MAP) is chosen dynamically and the number of the access routers (ARs) included in a MAP domain is also adjusted dynamically. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms those in which the number of the ARs in a MAP is fixed.
